Rock Dreams - Part 1

ROCK DREAMS. With a title like that, and a cover featuring Elvis Presley, John Lennon, Bob Dylan, Mick Jagger and David Bowie sitting round having coffee together, how could I be anything but fascinated?

In 2006, when I was taking a year off from university and working some of the final months at Tower Records before the chain's nation-wide heartbreaking close on 26 December 2006 (our store - Tower Fairfax - closed that day, but most others closed a day or two before) when I was first introduced to a worn copy of this glossy, oversized book. It was the night shift, and, at almost midnight on Monday, hardly anyone was perusing the massive store, so I carried Rock Dreams with me to the register I was to man, and began to carefully turn each luscious page. At the time, I thought I had uncovered some rare treasure, some book that I assumed (though I don't know why - chock it up to being a 19-year-old idiot) few people had ever seen or knew existed. I mean, what was this thing? It seemed too cool and too weird for mass consumption, although our store was sometimes a treasure-trove of little rarities (I got the audio CD of Cyrinda Foxe's awful autobiography there, some Gn'R and Stones bootlegs, etc). Rock Dreams is a book of amazingly real-looking but made-up illustrations of rock stars from the early days of Frankie Laine and Fats Domino to the contemporary gods of Marc Bolan and Lou Reed (the book was published in 1973) by Belgian artist Guy Peellaert. What's so interesting about the pictures is that they really are rock dreams - it isn't as if Peellaert is simply looking at a photo in Muziek Express and drawing it; he's visualizing, daydreaming, and fantasizing, he's creating the images of pop icons that we want to see, images that represent all the things - good, bad and ugly - that we as a culture have projected on the artists. They're all based on facts, of course - Janis Joplin passed out on a bed clutching a bottle of whiskey isn't even shocking or taking creative license at all, but stuff like Jerry Lee Lewis's 13-year-old bride toying innocently yet suggestively at her lingerie-looking wedding dress is a perfect example of the often poignant yet semi-uncomfortable underworld of decadence that makes this book so appealing. The illustrations are aided by the captions/text of Nik Cohn, who is the great artist's verbal counterpart, bringing to life these strange fascinations that exist somewhere between reality and fantasy - the very place, of course, that rock 'n' roll fans like me hold closest to our hearts.

This is only Part 1 and features a sample of 30-some illustrations from the book, but there are a lot more, so a Part 2 (and perhaps a Part 3) will inevitably follow. The Rock Dreams that I bought in 2006 was not, of course, a first edition, rather a reprint by Taschen. Many of the images spanned two pages, which is most unfavorable for scanning. I knew there must be a version that featured my absolute favorite photo in the book on a single page rather than a double, so that I could scan it completely and without that hideous spine down the center. In June of last year (god, I can't believe it's 2012 already), I spent arguably the most romantic 30 hour stretch of my life with a man who also owned Rock Dreams, and I was delighted to find that he indeed had an older copy that featured said photo on one page. It was easy enough to find on eBay (a site I spend countless hours on buying most of the stuff I feature on this blog), so I got one for myself (although even in this one, some of the images are spread over two pages).

When Mick, Marianne, Keith and Anita went to Los Angeles together in the summer of '68 whilst the Stones were recording "Beggar's Banquet", they hung around a lot with Gram Parsons, who was quickly becoming best friends with Keith. Gram took them to Joshua Tree National Park in the desert, and they all, along with Phil Kaufman and ever-present photog friend Michael Cooper who took these photos, ate psychedelics and tripped out with nature. These are some of my all time favorite rare photos of Mick and Keith and their wild women. AND Gram. Enjoy.

Gimme Shelter - The Rolling Stones' US tour, 1969

I've decided that tomorrow I'm going to watch Gimme Shelter, so I decided to post some more photos I've scanned of the Stones during the fall of 1969, when they toured America (for the first time in three years), in support of their best album (my favorite, at least), Let It Bleed. They just looked so fucking cool in this era, the Stones Mach II, including their fresh-faced new guitarist Mick Taylor, and Jagger donning his 'Leo' shirt for, like, a month straight (Mick J is the quintessential Leo, isn't he?). The music was hot, the mood was apocalyptic, and the tour ended at Altamont (post on that later). Enjoy.

Mad Sexy

In late April when I was in New York City with my girfriend Lucie, my feet ailing from a broken shoe and miles of walking in it, we stopped for relief at a drugstore and there I saw...the May 2011 issue of W magazine featuring a stunning Ms. January Jones on the cover. W is a fashion mag that I used to subscribe to in high school, ridiculously and incomprehensibly (someone must have told me it was cool), as the magazine and its articles and all-around inspiration usually disappoints me. However, Ms. Jones never does (correction: her appearance never does; her Mad Men character, Betty Draper - now Betty Francis - went from profoundly sad to profoundly bitchy somewhere in season 2, which sucks, but anyway). I love these photos because it exemplifies the undeniable truth about her beauty: that it needs no color - she can be outfitted simply in black, and those burning cornflower blue eyes, creamy white skin and pale blonde hair do all the illustrating. Not to mention her enviable and worshippable body, which, like her face, always looks effortless, as if a creature that dream-like simply exists.

Of course, I identify more with Christina Hendricks's brand of beauty and sex appeal, all ample curves and redheaded ferocity (plus Joan Holloway is SO much cooler than Betty), but it's nice to recognize aesthetic perfection when you see it... and here it is.

When I was staying outside of London this winter (January to March), I was living, lavishly, in a hotel (seriously, it was amazing; every night after work, I had two glasses of vintage Veuve Clicquot at the hotel bar waiting for me, it was divine). I've always loved all the "foreign" Vogues more than US Vogue, so I was quite pleased to find, while perusing the January 2011 British Vogue one evening whilst sipping my Champagne, a feature photoshoot starring Georgia May Jagger, the 19-year-old daughter of Mick and Jerry Hall (can ya tell?). She is just stunning, so I had to scan the pages of said Vogue issue for you guys to see. She is photographed with Dennis Hopper's son, 18-year-old Henry Hopper, as the male model. Enjoy... And please credit if you re-post. It took me quite a while to scan these in large size and edit the little knicks out of each page with Elements.

42 Years Ago Today, The Stones in the Park...

I won't bore you all with a detailed description of the Rolling Stones' performance at Hyde Park two days after Brian Jones's mysterious death-by-misadventure (aka Frank Thorogood accidentally killed him by drowning him in Brian's pool). Musically, it's not that impressive, and you can barely hear poor Mick Taylor, who at 20 years old, was performing with the Stones for the first time, and under such circumstances! And then Mick in his silly dress ensemble and his reading of "Adonais" and the release of those thousands of butterflies into the air (most of whom were dead, ironically). No Stones fan worth their skull rings doesn't own a battered VHS copy of this concert, or at least seen it several times, so if that's you, these pictures won't mean anything to you anyway. I've scanned MANY photos of the Hyde Park show, as almost every Stones book has one or two in there, but perhaps some of these will be new to you, so, enjoy. Naturally, I focus on photos of Marianne and Anita taken during the concert, Anita stylin' despite being eight months pregnant, and Marianne haunted by Brian's death and completely dope-sick. She and Mick went to the show together (with Nicholas in tow, of course), but Mick left that evening with his brown sugar Marsha Hunt, with whom he was already involved in an affair. The next day, the 6th of July 1969, Mick and Marianne flew to Sydney to begin the filming of the abysmal "Ned Kelly", but Marianne, as we all know, took 150 Tuinals upon arriving and was in a coma for six days. Mick, ever the workhorse, still turned up to the set, but afterwards, he was there at Marianne's side, and when finally she opened those sad, enormous, oceanic eyes of hers, Mick, moved and relieved that she had come out of the coma, grasped her hand and said, "Oh, Marianne, I thought I'd lost you", and she whispered, "Wild horses couldn't drag me away..." Anyway, we'll save that for another post...

Exiled

Every summer it happens; when the air is saturated with that sticky, humid thickness and the sun is burning, I always feel like listening to Exile On Main St (well, technically I should say, "I feel like listening to Exile more than I usually do", which is already an amount more sizeable than any person I know). And it's not because Exile is a particularly 'sunny' record or anything (although it does contain the 'kind-of' love song, "Happy", written by Keith about Anita and two-year-old Marlon, and it doesn't contain the absolutely heart-wrenching, wrist-slitting ballads of its predecessor or successor, Sticky Fingers and Goat's Head Soup respectively, that contain songs like "I Got The Blues", "Wild Horses", "Sister Morphine", "Coming Down Again" and "Angie"). It must be because my mind can't help but transport itself to the summer of 1971, wandering through the long halls and gargantuan rooms of Villa Nellcôte, the mansion Keith Richards had rented in Villefranche-sur-Mer, where much of what became Exile On Main St. was written and recorded. It is, in fact, probably my top favorite Rolling Stones “I wish I was there” daydream – laying out on the veranda with Anita, eating a lavish meal at midnight while Keith and Gram strum their country blues, wandering down to the dark basement for a “Sweet Virginia” singalong…

New York Was Such A Pity, But At Max's Kansas City, We Won...

So, it's probably "No Surprize" (the Aerosmith song that this entry's title is taken from) to you all that I have this mild obsession with famed New York City nightspot Max's Kansas City (that sadly no longer exists). "The back room" at Max's was the coolest, hippest place to be in the city circa 1972, and the great club, owned by Mickey Ruskin, was the home away from home for a slew of rock's most infamous players and their fabulous counterparts. Max’s opened at the end of 1965, and quickly attracted its New York School neighbors – artists, painters, sculptors, fashion designers (Betsey Johnson being one), and then Andy Warhol. After Andy and his Factory crew regulars started to frequent there, others quickly followed. The Glam Scene of the early 70's brought some of rock's elite to Max's, not just to dine on Lobster and chick peas and luxuriate in the back room, but also to perform. The New York Dolls, The Stooges and Aerosmith were regulars, and developed quite a following based on their early performances there. Bruce Springsteen, Gram & Emmylou, Tom Waits and many others passed through in the early 70's, before Max's became the stomping ground for predominantly punk rock and new wave groups in the late 70's (after Mickey was no longer the owner). But it wasn't just the well-known faces that, in perusing the books "High On Rebellion: Inside The Underground at Max's Kansas City" and "Max's Kansas City: Art, Glamour, Rock n' Roll", I found so compelling; it was also those Max's regulars that, infamous at one time, are relatively unknown, people like Wayne County and tragic Warholian Andrea Feldman, who, at 24, committed suicide by jumping off a building. There were so many fabulous people, and great photographers like Anton Perich, Leee Black Childers, and Danny Fields (only to name the most ubiquitous) were there to capture it all. Mickey Ruskin was a unique club owner in that he was a true patron of the arts; Lou Reed fondly recalls living on Mickey’s hospitality at Max’s to keep him alive: “Mickey, thin, hawk-faced, dark stringy hair severely parted and forever hanging over his right eye, was personally responsible for my survival for three years because he fed me every day. While I sometimes showed up for the five PM buffet, it was actually the ‘tab’ that made it possible for me and a small army of other artists to exist just to the left of the line that defines more extreme modes of criminality… People thought the Velvet Underground really existed, this appendage of Warhol’s. But we were broke, totally and completely and always had been. Money went for drugs or drink—not food. And there was never any money. But there was always Mickey and Max’s. We had a home in Mickey’s game room, this extension of his psyche, his home. He was interested in artists. He liked them. He wanted them to have a place. He wanted them to survive…”

The Rolling Stones Tour Of The Americas '75

So, this past Christmas, I decided that my favourite gift would be the gift I bought for myself: the Genesis Publications book by Christopher Simon Sykes (£395 - which is US $650 - plus shipping/handling) entitled The Rolling Stones Tour Of The Americas '75. 600 photographs, many never before seen, were compiled for this 2005 masterpiece, one of only 2150 ever published. This was my second Genesis Publications buy (the other being Michael Cooper's Stones/Beatles/rock n' roll book called Blinds & Shutters), and I was again pleased. I knew that at least two photos of Anita Pallenberg (a rare siting after 1973) were in the book, as my good friend Jayme, who runs and created the greatest ever Anita Pallenberg photo website (http://anitapallenberg.multiply.com) only has two 1975 Anita pics from the book on said site, and she pretty much has every Anita photo available. I was hoping, however, that there may have been another Anita pic - hidden somewhere, perhaps, and never considered big enough to scan - but alas, I was semi-crestfallen and indeed only two pictures of her exist in this book, and the third my own find from Rock Scene magazine. I have only scanned a fraction of the photographs from TOTA '75, so expect other installments. The Stones' 1975 tour of America (and despite the book and tour's title, there really WAS only one America toured - their plans to perform in South America never materialized) was epic indeed, and Sykes not only capitured it all, but saved invaluable diary entries, notes, and other memorabilia. Enjoy!

Young Lust

Legendary party girl and one-time girlfriend to some of rock n' roll's hardest-living bad boys, California-bred Sable Starr lost her virginity to Iggy Pop at age 13 (which just sounds sick to me, nowadays), and was the most salient and recognizable face of the new group of baby groupies that prowled the Sunset Strip in the early 70's. She was best friends with Lori Mattix, and together they became regulars at Rodney Bingenheimer's English Disco, where they enchanted Led Zeppelin and other rockers, and called out rude remarks to former GTO Miss Pamela, who had dated Jimmy Page and was then the ripe old age of 25. When the New York Dolls came to LA, Sable and friends waited by their hotel to give them a warm welcome, and to pick out the Doll they desired. For Sable, it was guitarist Johnny Thunders, and it began their tumultuous two year, coast-crossing romance.

Ultimately, Sable was a tragic figure, disappearing from "the scene" when she was still a teenager. She died two years ago of a brain tumor.

THE NEW YORK DOLLS

I figured it was about time I did a post on one of my top five all time favourite bands, the New York fuckin' Dolls. I love everything about the Dolls - their image, attitude, legend, personality (crisis), but more than anything - of course - their music, especially their self-titled debut, gritty rock n' roll at its finest. They came on quick and burned out fast, but left in their wake a legend that the world was only ready for 10 years later. At famed nightclub Max's Kansas City, the Dolls were undisputed royalty, but Midwestern 15-year-old boys (the bulk of the Circus-reading, music-buying audience) didn't understand this hard-hitting New York band whose guitarist played riffs like Keith Richards and wore heels like their slutty older sister. All photos by Bob Gruen, scanned by me. Part 1 of several blogs I plan to do on the Dolls.
