'70s Rock Queen Bebe Buell was born Beverle Lorence Buell on July 14, 1953. A native of Portsmouth, Virginia (a town in the southern part of the state located close to Norfolk), Bebe was accepted as a Ford model only three days after her mother submitted her photos to the New York-based agency. One year later, in 1972, she officially moved to New York City to pursue her career as fashion model. She was living in a women's home run by nuns at age 18 when she first met rocker Todd Rundgren, former Nazz founder and solo artist (although he released albums under the group name Runt, it was pretty solely his vision and credit). They promptly embarked on a relationship and moved in together in the city. In 1974, Bebe was the famous Miss November centerfold in Playboy magazine, which cost her her contract with Ford. She was one of the first fashion models to be featured in Playboy, and while the modeling world may have temporarily snubbed her overt display of sexiness, rock royalty did not. I have yet to read Rebel Heart, so I am uncertain as to the exact 'arrangement' she and Todd had concerning fidelity, but Bebe became a famous rock star girlfriend in the mid-70's, and her list of lovers is certainly impressive: Mick Jagger, David Bowie, Iggy Pop, Jimmy Page and (of course) Steven Tyler with whom she has daughter Liv. She later went on to date Rod Stewart, Stiv Bators (the Dead Boys, who wrote the song later covered by Gn'R, "Ain't It Fun"), and Elvis Costello. She lived with Todd until 1977, the same year she gave birth to Liv. Todd raised the child as his own daughter, although we all know that at age 11, she found out that her real father was Steven Tyler (it's difficult to deny the likeness between them). Steven probably would have been an unfit father; he had recently married another legendary New York band-aid, Cyrinda Foxe, and had a daughter Mia, although he was deeply addicted to heroin at this time. In the 1980s, Bebe fronted several of her own rock bands, and in the 90's began managing Liv's budding modeling and acting career. The two remain close, and Bebe became a grandmother in 2004.

I have always admired pictures of the young Bebe, and it's easy to see why so many men with their pick of beauties chose to spend time with her. She had amazing liquid blue eyes, a tall curvacious figure and epic cheekbones. I don't know much of her personally, though I've been told she's quite crazy. Still, I admire her for pursuing her passion of singing for a band; even though she has earned no commercial success, she still performs and makes her own way in a business that she of all people know is very much a men's world.

Don't you think it's just about time to hide away?

Today I came across a bunch of gorgeous photos of Mick, Marianne and Nicholas on holiday in Brazil in december 1967. There are more photographs on www.pictopia.com.

Mick Jagger made a little-known escape to Brazil for several weeks starting in December 1967 with Marianne Faithfull and her 3-year-old son Nicholas. The Rolling Stones had released two albums in the past six months – “Flowers” in July and “Their Satanic Majesties Request” in November. It was a rare getaway idyll for Jagger and Faithfull, who were at the height of their powers but wary of media exposure after a notorious drug bust in London the summer before. Poolside at the Copacabana Palace Hotel in Rio the couple befriended photographer Adger W. Cowans, and the new friends spent the following weeks relaxing and partying together, touring a favela on Rio’s outskirts and flying north to the state of Bahia where they stayed in a private beach house. Cowans remembers: “The energy was high. We all connected on another level -- about life and about poetry and music...Nobody knew who Mick was in Brazil. He wasn’t a star there, so we were just cool.” They parted ways in early 1968. Jagger and Faithfull later went through the miscarriage of a child conceived around this time, and eventually split. Cowan stowed the negatives away in his apartment in New York for more than three and a half decades.

Hot Mess

So, I have fallen in love with Amy Winehouse. Obviously I've known about her for the past couple of years, as "Rehab" was a bit inescapable, but I never really took an interest. I figured she was just another tabloid bad-girl, and anyway, what did she know about writing a song? And I'm typically dubious of any artist that gets really popular in this day and age, preferring not to listen to much of anything recorded in the past 15 or so years (obviously, most of my preferred music is from the 60s & 70s). However, a few months ago, someone made me a mix CD with two Amy songs, "Back To Black" and "Love Is A Losing Game". Several weeks ago, I was listening to the album more intently, and I just COULD NOT stop playing these songs, especially "Back To Black". Thursday night, I braved Best Buy, a retailor I hate, and bought Back To Black, her second album. Although further listens will give me a more precise review, this album is incredible. She has an amazing voice, sultry and genuinely unique, and the album's producer Mark Ronson does a fantastic job. She wrote all the songs on it, and if her lyrics are any indication of her real life dramas, she comes across intelligent, passionate and very relatable. The emotional pain of love and loss, anger and elation, are expressed very well. My favorite song on the album remains the title track, just because the beat is so great and the words are absolutely scathing:
"Back To Black"
He left no time to regret
Kept his dick wet
With his same old safe bet
Me, and my head high
And my tears dry
Get on without my guy
You went back to what you know
So far removed
From all that we went through
And I tread a troubled track
My odds are stacked
I go back to black
We only said goodbye with words
I died a hundred times
You go back to her and I go back to
I go back to... us
I love you much
It's not enough
You love blow and I love puff
And life is like a pipe
And I'm a tiny penny rolling up the walls inside
We only said goodbye with words
I died a hundred times
You go back to her
And I go back to
We only said goodbye with words
I died a hundred times
You go back to her
And I go back to black
Right?! I can't get over how great this song is. You need to hear it. Anyway, I hope everyone has been well. It's a rainy Monday here in D.C., after a spectacularly gorgeous weekend. My ex and I talked for like ten hours yesterday and Saturday, the one I often moan about not being able to get over, etc. We're going to give it another shot, which fills me with both excitement and passion and also fright, because of how much he and I went through, and all the hurt that circulated. But it's just something I have to do for myself. If you think someone is your soul mate and that you can be happy together, don't you have to try? I do believe that five months of being away from him has made light of a lot of things, and more so for him. He finally gave me the sincerest of apologies, and I know he's going to be good to me. Wish me luck!!!
